This is one is an all-time favourite, she is definitely the queen of neo-soul and I easily listen to her on a daily basis. With hits like ‘Apple Tree’, ‘Next Lifetime’ and ‘Other Side Of The Game’ plus many more, I’m talking about the Ms Erykah Badu! What a damn queen. PLUS she is coming to Oslo to perform at Øyafestivalen!!!
Have you got your ticket yet? Neither do I but I’ll be there!!!
I started listening to her about 7 years ago when I met Dan, a good friend of mine, he was playing Erykah Badu and Stephen Marley ‘In Love with You’ duet and a sister was hooked!
Side break: Dan told me once that he was partying with Ms E. Badu when she was touring in Australia and I was gobsmacked! I mean one of my good friends partying with a damn icon? Dan if you’re reading this, please explain! Thought I had a good story for ya’ll but didn’t want to get the facts twisted haha.
If you’re a fan of Lauryn Hill (another queen of the soul genre), Jill Scott (another one), Anthony Hamilton (too good!), D’Angelo (damn!) or Angie Stone (sis!) you would have definitely come across her. If not, get to listening because I can guarantee you will love her.
Here is one of my favourite songs:
First starting out in 1994, opening a show for D’Angelo (again, damn), she was instantly signed and released her first album Baduizm which birthed 3 top singles ‘Next Lifetime’, ‘On & On’ and ‘Otherside Of The Game’. CLASSICS! More recently she has released her album ‘But You Caint Use My Phone’, which is a mix of ‘TRap and B(lues)’. The title is stemming from her song ‘Tyrone’ and gives a sound that invites listeners to relax in bliss and tranquillity. This album is a fav as she does her own mix to ‘Hotline Bling’ by Drake and sister girl has laid it down!!! Hmm … Not only that it’s super futuristic but definitely keeps to Erykah Badu’s funky, cool rhythms and styles.
Who’s a fan of neo-soul?
